Abstract: Investigations show a correlation between road condition and accident risk.
The increasing accident risk with low friction between tyres and road, may be
counteracted with warning systems and by adapting the active systems of the
vehicle. Three methods to estimate road friction were developed during phase
1. All methods need further refinement before industrialization may
commence.
Phase 2 is aiming at further developing the technology and to
integrate two or more methods for friction estimation in order to improve their
confidence and coverage. In addition, one aim is to investigate current and
future vehicle functions that can be improved by the friction estimate.
