Subject(s): Online resources: Abstract: The road network system is a vital lifeline for the communities in the northern periphery of Sweden. The pavements are exposed to climate conditions that cause seasonal variations of their bearing capacity. The degradation accelerates during the spring thaw period although relatively few heavy loading cycles are applied as the bearing capacity of the pavements is at minimum. The degradation accumulates with time giving rise to costly rehabilitations within to short time period to restore the serviceability of the roads. One cost-effective method to try to overcome the short lifetime is to incorporate reinforcement such as geogrids or steel mesh inside the pavement structure to improve the structure bearing capacity especially during spring thaw. The reinforcement interaction mechanism with the multi-layer pavement structure is poorly understood today.
