Subject(s): Online resources: Abstract: Luftföroreningar beräknas orsaka stora negativa folkhälsoeffekter i svenska städer och vägtrafiken är en dominerande källa. Syfte med projektet är dels att genom mätningar kvantifiera PM10- och kväveoxidhalterna vid utsatt sträcka med variabla hastigheter, dels att ta fram effektsamband som underlag till beräkningsmodeller för kvantifiering av effekter av hastighetssättning, variabel eller periodiskt ändrad hastighetsutmärkning, och dels att pröva variabla hastigheter som ett verktyg att minska halterna. Projektet bidrar till ökad kunskap om hastighetens betydelse för partikelemissioner och halter. Försökssträckan omfattar väg E18, delen tpl Danderyds sjukhus – tpl Danderyds k:a, i nord- och sydgående körriktningar, och försöket beräknas pågå från våren 2009 till våren 2010. Mätning av luftkvalitet genomförs i flera steg/perioder, med däremellan förändrad hastighetsutmärkning.Abstract: Emissions of PM10 and other harmful air pollutants exceed European standards in Stockholm as well as in other Swedish city environments. Highway traffic is considered a major source of such emissions. However, our knowledge is limited about impact of road traffic on the concentration and distribution of air pollutants. Research is needed to help finding means to control these emissions along highways, in order for road traffic to contribute more to meeting European particulate targets. An assessment programme is set up to establish how concentration of air pollutants in the highway environment – principally PM10 and NOx – relate to i) traffic features, such as flow and speed, ii) meteorological elements, such as wind and moisture. An issue is to verify previous calculations by extensive measurement of the above factors. High levels of harmful particulate have been calculated for four school sites in close vicinity of the highway E18 north of Stockholm, along a 2 km stretch of motorway in an urban environment. On roadside are installed 6 measurement stations, to record all relevant data, as above. In addition, measurements are carried out right on school sites. These activities started in March 2009 and are planned to carry on through May 2010. Evaluation reports are scheduled for October 2009 and October 2010. However, trial data analysis during the course of the project will guide on possible changes (lowering) of regulatory speed levels already in autumn 2009 or in spring 2010. Changes are due to what level of correlation may be found between short time variation of pollution data and traffic data. Speed level control may include short term message variation (hourly), as well as periodic (daily, weekly). The intention is to implement such control on the test motorway in order that emissions be kept within limits. Motorist observance of speed limits is crucial to effects. Therefore substantial information efforts are made about these particular reasons for temporarily lowered speed limits.
