Abstract: Thefts of billions is now occuring on the roads throughout Europe. A recent trend in the industry is that terminals are now increasingly secure and as a result, crime has not dropped, just shifted to the road. As a consequence, driver attacks and cargo crime on parking places are commonplace, due to lack of protection. This project is aiming to cover the three most prevalaent threats in the road transport industry; theft, smuggling and terrorism. Even though the problem differs, the solutions are expected to be more similiar, giving claim to the joint approach suggested by this project. The project will consists of three steps, where the first step is to analyse current and future threats, and to match them with what is feasible from a technical and market perspective. This application will cover step 1. The following steps will be applied for in the end of 2009. Through development of concept and piloting, important solutions can be validated for later usage. These solutions are expected to improve the working conditions of the many drivers employed in the transportation industry while lowering the risk of theft, terrorism and smuggling. The aim for 2009 is to conduct the prestudy with a broad range of questions to be answered in a report, and to specify the content for a later project. These efforts are expected to increase the knowledge within this area, and to provide an indication of where the problem currently is and what has the highest potential of increase the security on the roads to a feasible cost.
