DAGTRANS(S), ARGOLOGIS(I)). Abstract: The demand for temperature-sensitive shipments has expanded considerably during past decades. Rail has lost this market almost entirely to road and the logistical infrastructure and organisation for this kind of transports is almost totally adapted to road transport. Rail faces some major challenges, if it wants to (re-)enter into this market, due to its specific characteristics, e.g. the need for specialized transport equipment and seasonal and directional variations in demand. At the same time transport costs for road transport through Europe tend to increase due to the introduction of road tolling and is facing quality problems due to gridlock on the motorway network and restrictions on important transport routes. The awareness of consumers for environmental aspects is increasing and the impact or transports is coming into focus. This makes a move from road to rail interesting for retailers as well as for producers. Thus there is a mutual interest from all stakeholders – producers, retailers, transport companies (railways) and the public in general – to find solutions, which enable rail to re-enter into this market again. The bearing idea of the TESS-project is to bring together actors (and their knowledge) from the whole transport chain – from the producers via the transport companies/railways to the retailers – in order to develop a model case for international intermodal temperature-sensitive shipments. Research topics include: - logistical and organizational structures in the field of international temperature-sensitive goods transport - system barriers in todays rail services - loading units, rolling stock and transloading technique - flexibility of intermodal services toward seasonal and directional variations - transport routes analysis (transport time, capacity, reliability, costs and relevant infrastructure parameters) - information handling and exchange - connection to national/regional distribution networks in the receiving region - organizational framework for implementation The project will observe relevant results from earlier national projects (e.g. DAGTRANS (S), ARGOLOGIS (I)). Stakeholders of the DAGTRANS-project (ICA, Coop) have expressed strong interest in the TESS-project and will supply data and information and participate actively in the project. Contacts to stakeholders in the producing regions have been established as well and data made available even from their side. The project brings together leading research institutions from three countries. The three partners on the Swedish side are members of the Swedish Intermodal Research Centre (SIR-C) and the project has been agreed on with the SIR-C Board. The aim is that the new contacts, which will be established in this project lays the foundation for future cooperations. An intention of the partners is to create a basis for participation in future international research calls, especially within the EU Framework Programme.
