Abstract: Individual front suspension (IFS) for heavy trucks is an innovation within vehicle development which opens possibility to substantially increase safety and comfort for driver. It helps to avoid safety critical situations and even increases drivers possibility to act properly in situation which has already happened. Raising demands on safety and driver environment as well as increased driveline excitations require prioritisation of IFS and active systems. Objectives of the project are to study dynamic interaction between the system fronts suspension / engine / chassis, and development of active systems for vibration control of heavy vehicles with IFS. The overall goal for the project is enhanced competence for how active systems can deal with the problems which will occur with an innovative front suspension, which meets the future demands on commercial vehicles safety and comfort. The project will contribute to an innovative vehicle development and secure the competiveness of the vehicle industry, with focus on safety and driver environment. By combining simulation and experimental studies, can vehicle demands on safety, comfort and cost efficiency be reached. The expected results will help Volvo to be one of the first in the heavy truck market with IFS to enhance safety and driver comfort. Therefore, an introduction of IFS is prioritized within the Volvos strategy for safety and environment.
