Abstract: Recent decades has seen an increased attention towards the threat of climate change to our built environment and not least our infrastructure. Accounting for the different ways in which potential climate change scenarios can affect our infrastructure is paramount in determining appropriate adaptation and risk management strategies. Accomplishing this aim will help safeguard the safety and performance of the existing as well as future structures while improving the resilience of the infrastructure these structures support. Overall, this will lead to a better preparedness and awareness, for all stakeholders involved, of some of the critical issues which require addressing for our society to be better equipped in taking on the challenges associated with climate change. The proposed project is concerned with establishing an improved management of the risks to our infrastructure in light of a changing climate. In this context, adaptation strategies are to be developed which facilitate a more rational management of the risks to our infrastructure as a result of climate change. This framework will focus on existing bridge structure but the project is expected to provide insight for a more suitable treatment of risk in the design of new bridges. Specific tasks which are included in the project are: - A review of climate risks to existing infrastructure including possible ranking and prioritization of critical risks in relation to vulnerable infrastructures; - An in-depth assessment of selected critical risk scenario especially in relation to existing design, inspection and MR&R protocols; - The development of adaptation strategies for improved risk treatment, e.g., in the form of design, inspection, and MR&R procedures, in addressing these critical risk scenarios; - The application of these strategies in practical cases (e.g. an existing or future bridge structure). The project will be executed as a parallel PhD and senior research project and will be executed by researchers/practitioners from LTH, SP, and SMHI. The project is of sufficient scope, requiring a degree of inter-disciplinarily, that a parallel project was considered the most suitable option.
