Abstract: This project starts in the assumption that gender equality is highly relevant in order to reach energy efficiency in the transport sector. There are large discrepancies in the transport sector along the lines of gender. The gender difference in CO2 emissions alone are so large that if men travelled the way women do, the energy use from passenger transport would diminish by close to 20%. The number of women involved in transport related decisions is low. The project will investigate for one, whether and how municipal transport sustainability ambitions as expressed in policies and objectives relate to gender representation and norms, secondly develop methods for how research and practice can interact to advance knowledge on how gender equality can contribute to a sustainable and energy efficient transport system. To this end the project will work with municipalities to realize the potential for achieving energy efficiency according to kWh/capita and kg CO2 equivalents/capita.
