Subject(s): Abstract: Based on the results from a recent study by Google, KTH and Trafik Stockholm on the Södra Länken (SL) tunnel in Stockholm, ramp metering is found to be a very promising strategy for regulating the traffic congestion inside the tunnel and manage tunnel throughput more effectively, instead of the current drastic closure policy. The study also found that both location and timing of actions such as closure or ramp metering have a large impact on the potential mitigation of congestion. The aim of this project is to investigate and evaluate the potential of using different traffic management strategies to mitigate traffic congestion on the Swedish motorways, and especially develop guidelines for where and when they are most effective.
