Abstract: This project deals with planning and design of the local public transport system. Decision makers at the local level are facing a falling passenger base and increasing costs, forcing the society each year to increase the subsidies to public transport, without any increase in passengers. In order to break the link that has long existed between economic activity and the environmental impact of the transport system, an important part of the transport policy objectives is that public transport should gain market share from the private car. In order to reduce energy consumption and for environmental and health reasons, it is important that the market shares are taken from the car and not from walking and cycling. The project aims to investigate how public transport system can be designed to win travelers among the current car users, instead of from walkers and cyclists, and examine how this design can be done in parallel with planning measures, in order to benefit environmentally friendly modes of transport. The results can be used in planning for improved local environment and more efficient use of energy and other resources.
