Abstract: Private car use is increasing in Sweden and consume large amounts of energy. Strong efforts are made to shift trips from car to public transport in order to make transport more sustainable. A more flexible public transport could be a stepping stone to attract motorists and achieve an altered travel behavior. A solution to these problems may be to organize smart car pooling services with taxis. Today, taxi fares are expensive, but if more people share the cost, this could be attractive. So far, a solution of this kind have been difficult to achieve, but with smart phones, a breakthrough may occur. The project is a study in order to be able to start a pilot. Travelers can thanks to its smart phone and its GPS capability book a taxi carpool. A separate application ("app") allows for the reservation and a system takes care of bookings and calculate appropriate routes for taxis. By multiple customers share a taxi, the cost per passenger is to be much lower than the regular taxi fare. The novelty of this project is that it should take advantage of new technology so that your order can be made in real time and without predetermined addresses The project will lead to changes in travel behavior and energy efficiency, by reducing car dependency and move individual car journeys undertaken by car to intelligent taxi pooling. Fully implemented in Taxi Stockholm's fleet, the system is estimated to lead to annual energy savings of 50 GWh.
