Abstract: The project is a demonstration project where the objective is to verify the ability to operate marine engines on non-oil based fuels such as alcohol and ethers (Methanol and Di-methyl ether [DME]). The project is based on the findings in the project “Effship” (www.effship.com), where it is concluded that fuel based on methanol can become a very attractive fuel from environmental and cost perspectives. Methanol is today produced from natural gas and to an increasing extent from bio feedstock and can – in a longer perspective – even be made out of sun-produced hydrogen and carbon dioxide. The use of methanol, which is converted into DME onboard, will also enable the ships to comply with the upcoming SECA regulation regarding NOx, SOx and PM regulations without any further after treatment.
