Subject(s): Abstract: The aim of the project is to evaluate the state of the art occupant substitute side impact evaluation tools (mechanical and numerical) and develop methods to predict injuries with the tools. Influence of age, gender and weight on injury mechanisms should be taken into consideration. Extended aim is to combine accident reconstruction, real life data analysis and CAE analysis to develop a generic numerical model as side evaluation tool that can be used to develop robust occupant side impact protection and gain knowledge about the needs for future occupant side impact protection systems. This project will result in following: Knowledge about real life side impacts. Performance of side air bags (AIS 3+) Updated and Validated THUMS model for lateral loading. Guidelines for using THUMS for predicting most common injuries in side impact. Propose modifications on WorldSID for biofidelity improvements Potentially future vehicle and restraint designs. Numerical tool for Fleetwide benefit and robustness predictions for modified restraint systems Accident reconstruction results: Mechanical WorldSID Numerical WorldSID and THUMS. In order to use the THUMS for side impact evaluation sove validation will be needed to previously performed and published PMHS tests. Real life data for modern cars will give input on vehicle and crash characteristics, injury mechanisms and distribution. These findings will be input in the construction of the generic side impact numerical model. The generic model, in combination with a car specific model, will be used for injury prediction as well as restraint system evaluation both with THUMS and WorldSID.
