Abstract: Lower aerodynamic drag improves fuel economy independent of driveline. The improvement of aerodynamic resistance increases with every new vehicle generation. Future passenger cars are judged to need to achieve improvements of more than 20% between old and new model to give the required contribution to better fuel economy. Simultaneously, customer demands for attractive design are increasing. Companies which are capable of combining attractive design and good aerodynamics will therefore have a competetive benefit.
The project will investigate and map potentials to realise lowered aerodynamic resistance by shape changes combining shape and function, combined with appealing design. By close cooperation between design and aerodynamics, enablers for simultaneous attractive design and low aerodynamic resistance will be mapped. Areas with need for new technical solutions will be identified. To a degree, the project will also develop and test the efficiency of new solutions.
