Abstract: The objective of this project is to increase the knowledge on the optimization process of future vehicle combinations and chassis structures in terms of increase energy efficiency and reduce emissions. Alternative engines, new technologies for distributed drive units and cooling systems as well as green corridors constitute cornerstones in the study. Reducing fuel consumption on long distance vehicle combinations and emmissions and noise levels on urban distribution vehicles are the main targets. Parasitic losses of auxiliary systems are minimized through an optimized design, positioning and control. Energy recovery systems are included in the total energy budget of the vehicle. External aerodynamics and cooling flows are key issues, and modern experimental and numerical tools are used for detailed mapping of the flow and temperature fields around the vehicles and inside the engine compartments. Active controls of the flow and temperature fields are introduced in significant areas.
