Abstract: The strive to reduce vehicular CO2 emissions has in the case of transmissions resulted in a reduction in weight of the components with 25-30% and a simultaneous increase of torque with 160% during the last 10 years. 1996 - 2002 there was a PFF financed cooperation between the parties of the application. The work resulted in clear competition advantage for the involved companies. Recent studies have shown that the aims and measures used in the old work were not valid any more. Volvo Technology, Volvo Powertrain, Getrag AWD, Getrag-Ford Transmissions Sweden and University of Halmstad have agreed to study the optimisation of the functional surface of the gear with respect to torque output without scarifying friction properties. The result of the project will be a model of the functional surface as function of the surface treatment. A new measure of a functional surface as function of geometry and chemistry will also be presented.
