I projektet kommer rullmotståndsfunktionen att definieras som ett artificiellt neuralt nätverk som i sin tur kommer att optimeras.Abstract: In order to improve the fuel efficiency the various energy losses must be minimised. There are several different sources of energy losses for a vehicle e.g. engine losses, driveline losses, aerodynamic drag, tyre drag, etc. After engine losses, aerodynamic drag & tyre drag share the second place when it comes to energy losses. This project will develop a methodology with the objective to minimise the energy losses caused by the tyre drag. Tyre drag is a very complex function consisting of several parameters e.g. gross vehicle weight, tyre rolling resistance, tyre dimensions, tyre pressure, vehicle speed, rear axle gear ratio etc. Due to the complex nature of the function and the large amount of variables affecting each other a systematic and automatized way of working is required in order to efficiently find optimum solutions. In this project the state of the art on how these factors influence the tyre drag should be identified. This should be presented as a tyre drag function by using an artificial neural network on which optimisation finally will be performed. The potential for fuel efficiency improvements is obvious since the reduction of tyre drag will significantly reduce the fuel consumption. Preliminary studies indicate that a fuel consumption reduction of 2-4% is reasonable for an optimised vehicle configuration. The knowledge base and the skills within this very important field, optimisation, will be improved at Volvo; consequently optimisation will be more widely used and to a larger extent. Limited research are today available within this field consequently this will give Volvo a competitive advantage when it comes to the development of efficient, durable and environmentally sound solutions.
