Abstract: This is a vertical project within Volvo Powertrain which purpose is to fine ways for diesel engine combustion with extreme high efficiency. This is to be achieved by combining technological development on three fronts. 1. Combustion profile with high efficiency and low particles. 2. Thermodynamic Millercycle with higher expansion then compression. 3. Extreme low temperature of the charge air. Several different concepts with charge air cooling with be evaluated and investigated. For example expansion and absobtion cooling combined with conventional cooling techniques and different bottoming cycles. The main thing is to get a motor system with high efficiency, low particles and an SCR catalyst to deal with the nitrogen oxides. The climate problem and costumer demand of low operating costs makes that both society and costumers demands low fuel consumption.
