Abstract: In this project the aim is to reduce the energy losses in mobile hydraulic systems by means of introducing new technology and more sophisticated control methods. It will involve recovery of the potential energy stored in elevated loads, reduction of throttling losses and recovery of braking energy. The primary application for this project is construction machinery, especially wheel loaders and excavators. In a wheel loader the hydraulics often stand for more than 50% of the total fuel consumption, with an average energy efficiency as low as about 40%. A specific aim is to reduce the fuel consumption of a wheel loader by 10-15% depending on the size of machine and driving cycle. The aim is also to distinguish whether recovered energy should be stored hydraulically or electrically in systems where both options are available. The result is also applicable to future transmission development in connection to hybrid technology.
