Abstract: Research by previous project have so far proven that it is feasible to use active flow control to obtain a significant effect on the aerodynamic drag and thus reduce fuel consumption for a truck carriage. However, the reduction is far from optimal. Further development and optimization are required for greater impact. Active flow control will also be applied in several areas of a truck carriage. In addition to the rear edge of a trailer, an investigation of the opportunities of the method will be done on the front of a truck in cross wind, and for the gap between the truck cab and trailer. These areas are known for their strong contribution to the aerodynamic drag. Chalmers and PKE will use flow simulations to optimize the shape, placement, flow rate and frequency for the active flow control device (actuator). SKAB will then, with the help of input from the simulations, manufacture a prototype. Volvo will then do fuel consumption tests with this prototype at Hällered Proving Ground.
