The overall goal of this project (D60-2) is to study possibilities to significantly increase the fuel efficiency of internal combustion engines. As the title implies the goal is to reach 60% efficiency. In order to reach this, all losses in the fuel conversion process must be taken into account and minimized. The main focus is on building knowledge related to in-cylinder heat transfer. D60 is an existing cluster project divided into three individual subprojects (on the request of the Energy agency). - D60m: Detailed engine heat transfer modeling. - D60e: Engine experiments and system modeling. - D60l: Advanced optical- and laser-diagnostics. The overall goal for the activity in D60l-2 is to build knowledge around the subject of remote temperature probing and to provide D60m-2 with reliable data from the thermal boundary layer for validation of heat transfer models. For this second phase the cluster will greatly benefit from the momentum of ongoing activities and is expected to produce a substantial amount of scientific results while striving towards the 60% efficient engine. An important addition to this second phase is to include bio-fuels in the research activities.
