En väl fungerande och Abstract: The research work undertaken within PROCEED will improve the understanding of the main issues related to the fundamental changes that local and regional public transport operations in most EU Member States are currently undergoing. PROCEED will tackle the challenges and lead to an improved expertise and an extended knowledge-base, that on the one hand will help to develop, implement and assess European policy, and on the other hand will help to plan, develop and implement effective and efficient public transport (bus) systems in small and medium sized cities (between 25.000 and 200.000 inhabitants) and their surroundings all over Europe. Such provision of high quality public transport is an essential contribution to the framework-conditions supporting modal shift away from individual motorized traffic towards sustainable transport modes. Practical guidelines that include the most important experiences, will be designed to help decision makers, public transport planners and operators to efficiently and effectively develop, upgrade, finance and manage urban bus systems and related mobility services. PROCEED will also produce educational materials (Power Point presentations, written materials) especially addressing ongoing transport planners and decision makers and distribute these to schools and universities.
